Winning at Math - 5th Edition

Characteristics of the New 5 th Editions of Winning at Math:
Your Guide to Learning Mathematics Through Successful Study Skills

The 5 th edition of Winning at Math ( WAM ), available Fall 2007, improves upon what is already the only research based math study skills text documented to increase student success in math courses. Research studies indicate that students who use WAM are more successful in math courses (click for research). The 5 th edition of WAM now has a version that includes a password for the Study Skills Plus/C3S web-based general study skills (click for C3S information). This version is for students who also need general study skills in a freshman orientation or life skills course. The version without the C3S is mainly for students in math related areas such as math courses, labs, anxiety workshops or learning resource centers. New and expanded aspects of WAM 5th edition are based on faculty and student input.

WAM 5 th edition has 5 major enhancements:

  1. WAM is more student and faculty interactive due to having new in-chapter writing assignments as well as expanded chapter endings with writing assignments that can be torn out and handed in for instructor review.

  2. Due to the high number of students suffering from test anxiety, WAM now features the Test Attitude Inventory , a device used to help determine how much it hurts them during a test. Then students can use the How to Reduce Test Anxiety CD in the back of the text, which features both Short-Term and Long-Term relaxation techniques (click for more information).

  3. WAM will have a companion password protected website, called Winning at Math Student Resources, that will have the new comprehensive Math Study Skills Evaluation, additional study skills information, manipulative math websites, math mnemonic/acronym examples, time management charts, student disability resources and other resources.

  4. WAM offers new and expanded solutions to help students improve their: motivation, completing of homework/online homework, understanding that more math classes means more money, understanding of the syllabus, communication with math faculty, self-esteem/self-efficacy and developing the Math Learning Profile Sheet.

  5. The WAM Study Skills Puls/C3S version has a password in the back of the text that gives the student access to the C3S website (click for C3S information). The interactive site assesses the students study skills and refers students to five interactive instructional sites: Studying Effectively, Remembering Information, Reading and Taking Notes from Textbooks, Taking Notes in Class, and Preparing for and Taking Tests. There is a companion instructor management site.

WAM introductory suggested retail price $29.95 (ISBN 0-940287-39-0 ) and with the C3S is $38.95 (ISBN is 0-940287-40-4).
